In September 2009 I embarked on a MA Communication Design degree at Winchester School of Art, I simultaneously began a part time job at a Waitrose supermarket (463 Winchester) to help fund my student endeavour. It was here that I began to notice the scraps of paper with lists of various items people used to remind them of the supermarket purchases they wished to make. These shopping lists varied in detail, hand writing style, spelling and grammar to format and content, each element painting a picture of the author, their tastes, affluence and education. Despite the intimate details on offer, perhaps through their anonymity, people regularly leave these clues about their lives on supermarket trolleys and floors, it’s here that I began to collect the shopping lists of other people.
